What in tarnation is this?
System gamer magazine is a new retro gaming magazine that has one issue so far (or levels as they like to call it). a couple copies were sent to me on behalf of a fan of the show! thank you so much! the author/creator of this magazine himself is the one that donated them to me, which makes it even better. initially, i planned on making a video on this (in fact, i did) but ultimately wasn't satisfied with the final product. since i just recently launched this blog on my website i thought it'd be a cool idea to review it in the form of an article as well as announce a free giveaway! you heard that right! since i was sent two copies, i figured i'd give one away for free to one lucky person out there. let me take a moment to share some high quality pictures and talk about this thing for a moment, and then i'll discuss how you can win a copy!
system gamer magazine is short, sweet and smaller than the average video game magazine. it's the perfect handheld magazine for an efficient price of 5 bucks for a physical copy and 2.50 digital. the only complaint i have is that it isn't a monthly subscription. as far as i know, there's no announcement yet as far as when/if issue 2 is coming out. i understand the work, cost and everything else that goes into making this, but i think a consistent release schedule would garner a lot of fans! especially since the spine says "november 2022" on it, as if there's one every month. i get this is only a prototype or pilot if you will, i just hope we get a lot of these because i personally want to become a customer and not just because this was sent to me for free. whether it's in my spare time or if i'm recording footage, 99% of the indie games or new retro-style games i play are on steam. though i'm not much of a pc gamer and hate k&m gaming, but steam is the best option for a lot of these indie games (i want a steam deck!!!).
system gamer magazine has a mascot, the "system soldier" with a little backstory which is a nice touch. the overall theme is pretty cool, with sections and chapters listed as "missions". there's "incoming intel" which focuses on the latest news in retro gaming. news in retro gaming!? yes! your favorite retro game is getting a comic book series, getting rereleased on the evercade, the commodore 64 is getting mainstream attention due to "retro gamer joe" on youtube! any news that has to do with the retro gaming scene is in here! then there's "future missions" which showcases upcoming indie games/new retro style games coming out with a neat anticipation score, pictures and a brief description on each game.

"current missions" are reviews of brand new games that just came out. obviously since the focus is retro/indie gaming, it's not your typical AAA title. which makes it that much more interesting. i think that's my favorite part about this magazine. it gives me new games i haven't heard of to either look forward to, make a youtube video about, or save on my wishlist on steam.
"past missions" is a cool section that features reviews of retro games. so this magazine has news and reviews of new and old games. how cool!? my only gripe is that the "past missions" aren't in order. you'll get one, then it will skip back to a different section like "current missions" and then back to "past missions". there's also only 2 games in this section for the first issue. hopefully in the future we get more.
last but not least is "briefing" which a really cool section that shows off upcoming games getting rereleased on cartridges! unreleased games or games that weren't intended for the mega drive! i say mega drive because i forgot to mention... this is a european magazine. that's right, it's made clear in london, england. though that's the case, it focuses on games worldwide and north america as well. overall, it's a neat little gaming magazine that deserves some more attention. i'm honored to have been sent free copies by the creator himself, so thank you again! i hope the lucky winner enjoys this as well! oh yeah... here's how to win a copy!
